Julian Zeitler presented his master's thesis on Crystal Field Manipulation of Transition Metal Atoms on Surfaces. His work explored how the local binding environment shapes the spin and orbital moment of individual transition metal atoms — demonstrating that simply placing an atom on a different binding site can switch its electronic transitions. Taking this a step further, Julian showed that these transitions can be actively tuned by pulling on individual atoms with an AFM/STM tip, effectively using mechanical manipulation to tune the crystal field.
