Visit by Dr. Thomas Michely

November 17, 2025

We were pleased to welcome Dr. Thomas Michely to our institute, where he gave an engaging talk titled "Synthesis and Electronic Properties of Some New 2D Materials." We learned about the exciting discovery of novel chromium-sulfur 2D materials—Cr₂S₃-2D and Cr₂₂/₃S₄-2D—that have no bulk counterparts and can only be synthesized as atomically thin layers using molecular beam epitaxy on graphene substrates. Through a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and density functional theory calculations, these materials were shown to be structurally stable under ambient conditions and exhibit intriguing semiconducting and magnetic properties. Dr. Michely also enjoyed lab tours at our institute, allowing for valuable exchange about experimental techniques and future research directions. We thank Thomas for sharing these fascinating insights into the world of synthetic 2D materials!
