MSc and BSc projects in Quantum Optomechanics

April 7, 2022 /

The Hong group is inviting students to apply for MSc and BSc projects in experimental quantum optomechanics.

We are inviting students to apply for MSc and BSc projects in the Hong group (https://www.fmq.uni-stuttgart.de/hong-group/) at the Institute for Functional Matter and Quantum Technologies. Our group is physically located in the ZAQuant (Center for Applied Quantum Technology), the newly established state-of-the-art research building on the Vaihingen campus.

Quantum optomechanics is a new, exciting field in quantum science that aims to optically control quantum motions of mesoscopic mechanical objects like micromechanical devices. It will allow us to create new quantum technologies and probe quantum principles in new mass and length scales. Our group focuses on developing novel hybrid quantum optomechanical systems consisting of optically levitated glass micro-beads and nanophotonic devices.

We are looking for motivated students who wish to participate in our research. Currently available topics include (but are not limited to),

  • Design and fabrication of optical fiber interfaces for nanophotonic devices
  • Design and simulation of photonic crystal cavities for quantum optomechanics
  • Development of deterministic methods to load nano-objects into an optical tweezer
  • Development of a nanoparticle control and trapping system with fiber-based optical tweezers

Throughout these projects, you will gain the experience needed for quantum optics, nanophotonics, and quantum measurement and control. If you are interested, please don't hesitate to contact us!
