Molecular Quantum Spin Processor in a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)

Our team is an internationally established research group with a focus on studying ultrafast processes on surfaces with sub-atomic resolution. We specialize in atomic-scale magnetism, light-matter interaction and emergent many-body phenomena.

Qubits are the basis of all quantum technologies. While several different approaches for computing architectures with qubits are being proposed, there is still room for improvement and innovation. Particularly, magnetic molecules and atoms could potentially be ideal qubits in parts due to their smalls size and their tunability. As part of the Integrated Quantum Science and Technology Center ( and a European initiative on molecular quantum science, we explore the applicability of such atomic-scale qubits by scanning tunneling microscopy in combination with ultrafast and electron spin resonance spectroscopy.

You will work with a one-of-a-kind scanning probe microscope with ultra-broadband excitation capabilities and investigate the coherence dynamics of individual atoms and molecules. Part of your project will be to design networks of molecular spin qubits and explore the interplay of superconductors with quantum coherent states in tailored molecules. You will participate in a interdisciplinary team developing a new quantum computing architecture that uses individual molecules as qubits.

Your profile:

  • You hold a Masters degree in physics.
  • A background in atomic physics, solid state physics or microwave electronics is appreciated.
  • You have a strong work ethic and enjoy working collaboratively in a small team.
