Ultrafast Optical Pump-Probe meets Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM)

Our team is an internationally established research group with a focus on studying ultrafast processes on surfaces with sub-atomic resolution. All-electronic and light-coupled STM have been developed in our group, allowing us to investigate single spin and electron dynamics on their intrinsic timescales.

STM is a unique tool in studying electronic and atomic structures on the surface. Often, it is a static imaging technique, which cannot access the underlying dynamics in materials. By combining a homebuilt STM with THz pulses, we are one of the few groups in the world that achieve sub[1]picosecond temporal resolution at the atomic scale. Now, we aim to uncover ultrafast coherent dynamics on these small length scales. For this purpose, your task will be to implement a new optical setup in the existing THz-STM which enables femtosecond infrared (IR) and visible (VIS) light excitation. The project includes building an optical setup and applying scanning tunneling microscopy at the forefront of nanoscience research. You will image electron and phonon dynamics and photo-induced phenomena of individual atoms, molecules and nanostructures.

Your profile:

  • You hold a Masters degree in physics, photonics or similar fields and are interested in designing a one-of-a-kind instrument.
  • You have experience in at least one area relevant to the project, for example, developing optical setups, nonlinear optics, scanning near-field optical microscopy or scanning tunneling microscopy.
  •  You have a strong work ethic and enjoy working collaboratively in a small team.
