From understanding the dynamics of ice ages to atoms switching spins - "Stochastic Resonance" is the term of the day of our visit from Sue Coppersmith. There is a lot of excitement in the air, as Sue's theoretical work on Stochastic Resonance matches well to the experimental findings of the Loth group, using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy to observe spin switching rates of single atoms. In her talk as part of the IQST seminar series at the ZA-Quant, Sue explains Stochastic Resonance and shares her excitement for the experimental observations. The use of stochastic resonance measurements thereby promisses to open insights that other methods cannot access.
